Grit is an important part of a bird’s diet. Since they have no teeth, birds must ingest small, hard particles to grind seed and food in their gizzard (a sac-like organ lined with muscles that facilitate the grinding of food). These hard particles are known as grit.

Grit is also a major source of calcium that is important to backyard birds during egg laying. Blue jays and crows often turn to nest robbing to get the needed calcium . Though grit requirements differ for each species of bird, it is often in short supply – especially in winter.

Mix five to ten pounds of grit for every 100 pounds of birdseed.

In the winter, you may see flocks of birds along roadsides after the snowplows have passed. They're after the grit. Adding grit to your feeder is helpful year-round, but particularly in the winter and spring.

This grit feeder will help attract all types of birds and solve one of their daily problems (locating grit). You can also put sunflower seed for all birds (all year) and in April in our area (Georgia) use proso millet for Indigo Buntings in the grit feeder. Buntings and other Song Birds Love this type of Feeder. Put at least 9 ft. away from a place a squirrel can jump parallel to the feeder.

It is also important to feed Wildlife Sciences® Premium Suet Calcium Blend in Late Winter and Early Spring for egg laying wild birds.
